Dortmund Airport, Germany

Situation:

In 2001, a vehicle-free apron was developed for the new terminal building and apron at Dortmund Airport.

Aircraft at 13 parking positions are serviced through underfloor systems providing power, pre-conditioned air, potable water, blue water, and sewage—eliminating the need for conventional service vehicles. Roediger supplied the wet services plants and equipment for five service tunnels.

The accessible underground service tunnels are equipped with pop-up pits. Aircraft connections are made manually using dedicated hose-reel systems. The required media are supplied through pipe networks installed within the tunnels, running from the terminal basement to the apron.

Solution:

  • Blue water is automatically prepared in two batch-operated mixing tanks with integrated chemical dosing and mixing.
  • Sewage is extracted from aircraft waste tanks via compact vacuum stations installed in service tunnels, then pumped to the sewer system manhole.
  • Exhaust air is treated by a two-stage odor control unit with biofilter and activated carbon filters.
  • Wet services are supplied and extracted via underground pits, eliminating service vehicles. Retractable pop-up pits are ergonomic and close flush with the tarmac. Covers are rated for 90-ton aircraft loads.
